Type 1 Diabetes: My Blood Sugar Battle and a Terrifying Pancreas Scare

Although my blood sugar levels slowly began to stabilize after starting insulin therapy, my ordeal was far from over. In fact, subsequent detailed MRI scans revealed that my 'pancreas was severely swollen,' raising suspicions of another serious illness. This time, I'll share details about this other alarming change in my body and the concerning test results.

[Swollen Pancreas and Suspected Autoimmune Pancreatitis]

  • Detailed MRI imaging of my internal organs revealed that my pancreas was generally enlarged (swollen and bloated).
  • My doctor informed me of the possibility of pancreatic cancer, as well as 'my own immune system mistakenly attacking my pancreas (autoimmune pancreatitis).
  • Hearing that the sudden onset of fulminant Type 1 Diabetes might be deeply connected to this severe inflammation of my pancreas, I was shocked to realize just how much my body was deteriorating.
  • Was it diabetes first, or pancreatitis? The cause of fulminant Type 1 Diabetes is often unclear, making it hard to say...

[Terrifying Abnormal Numbers]

  • Among my blood test results, one alarming number was CA19-9.
  • This value is typically used as a marker for cancer (tumor marker), with a reference range of 37.0 or less. However, I astonishingly registered an off-the-charts 401.0 U/mL.
  • I vividly remember my heart pounding when the doctor explained, 'It's unclear if this is a serious illness, or just a temporary spike due to your severely swollen pancreas.'
